29 Dec The Most Powerful Hacks of 2017 and How They Will Unlock Your Optimal Fitness, Health, and Happiness in 2018
The key takeaways from my craziest year yet.
You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think. Marcus Aurelius
2017 is coming to an end, and it’s time to reflect on what has happened and what’s up next. What worked this year and what didn’t? What are the most important lessons to make sure that we don’t make the same mistakes again, and instead create the lives of our dreams?
Here are my most powerful learnings from the past year, which I will prioritize in 2018 to maximise my chances of success. What are yours?
1. Plant Medicine
I don’t want to think where I’d be if I hadn’t gone to Rythmia Life Advancement Center in Costa Rica for ayahuasca ceremonies this year. It gave me healing for my long-term struggles with depressive episodes and re-connected me with my family. A few sad and lonely days over Christmas aside, my dark past feels like a different lifetime.
I will return to Rythmia for more personal development work as soon as possible in 2018!
I’ve been practicing intermittent fasting, by limiting my eating to a six-hour window, for the last couple of years. This year I stepped up my game by doing two five-day fasts when I ate nothing, as I described in this blog post.
The reason for this torture? I couldn’t not do it once I learned the research about staying cancer-free through fasting. I figured that it was a small price to pay.
If there were no consequences, I’d lie in bed all day long watching Netflix and eating chocolate. But I’ve tried that lifestyle enough to know that it ends in chaos. Fasting is not as “fun” but I love how it makes me feel: mentally and physically strong, empowered, and free.
I’ve also taken my daily fasting to the next level, through eating only once a day on most days. This is possible through replacing both breakfast and lunch with a cup of Bulletproof Coffee, that keeps me energetic and satiated until dinner. As a bonus, my body has never looked better and leaner, and I hardly work out.
My inspiration to one meal per day comes from Wim Hof, “The Iceman.” I was shocked when I trained with him and learned about his eating practice. My thought was “I could never do that!” But I could, and now I do. I love breaking down my mental boundaries like that: we can do so much more than we think. (Safety always comes first, though: I listen to what feels right for my body, I don’t push myself, and I make sure that my period is regular.)
I will continue my fasting adventures in 2018, including finally reading the fasting bible The Complete Guide to Fasting.
3. The Theory of Next
Back in my career in corporate sales, I used to pride myself on being a go-getter like a “dog with a bone.” (And I had compulsive thoughts in job interviews about instead saying “I’m a dog with a boner.”)
But although resilience can be great, I’ve realized that it can also be a hinder. Sometimes, I get too fixated on targets that I miss other opportunities or waste energy on things that just end up pissing me off.
I just read the excellent book Winning through Intimidation, which introduced me to The Theory of Next. In a nutshell, the idea is to move on quickly when things are not working out. It doesn’t mean giving up, but moving on to other opportunities. This practice means that eventually, you will reach your goal.
How life could have been different if I’d practiced this concept sooner! Instead of desperately trying to “make it work” with sugar and foods that don’t agree with me, men who are not into me, potential business collaborators who don’t care.
One of my favorite sections in Jack Canfield’s Success Principles is the author’s idea of “Some will. Some won’t. So what. Someone’s waiting.” There are billions of people in the world, and billions of ways to solve whatever problem you’re facing. If you keep going, inevitably you will find the right people and solutions!
In 2018, whenever I come across someone or something that is not really working out, I’m just going to say in my head: “Theory of Next!” and move on. (And I will forgive myself for seeing that man who wasn’t into me just a couple of days ago – 2018, right!)
I’m in Dubai for another couple of weeks, where I will be kickstarting the new year with organizing a free ketogenic diet event. If you want to learn how to eat for ultimate health and wellbeing to make 2018 your best year ever, come along! You’ll learn the exact steps for succeeding on the ketogenic diet and will get to try a sample menu of delicious ketogenic dishes.
Lastly, I want to wish you the very best for 2018. A new year is a blank page. It’s up to you what you do with it! What are your goals and how are you going to make them happen?
